This batch of Alter Ego Bourbon from Doc Swinson is 6 year old MGP Bourbon with a mash bill of 75% Corn, 21% Rye, and 4% Malted Barley. After the initial aging in new American oak, this was finished in two different types of sherry butts (PX & Oloroso), cognac puncheons and then a long resting period in ex-cognac foeders to finish the marrying process. Some of the Sherry Butts were sourced from Montilla-Moriles, Spain, where casks date back to the 1920s.
Racy and inviting, it’s got loads of complexity — as the extensive finishing would suggest. The palate bursts with flavor, ranging from chewy caramel to gingerbread, almond to cherry notes. While it’s got a clear fruitiness on the tongue, the finish sees some bracing sweetness, clearly driven here by raisiny Cognac notes, and it shines the brightest as it slowly fades out. Tough to put down and a delight through and through. Bottled at 47.9% abv.
