 Wafting from the glass with notes of black cherries, cassis, fruitcake and mint, the 2016 Merlot from Ancient Peaks is full-bodied and velvety on the palate, with a generous core of savory fruit, powdery tannins and a long, flavorful finish. For the price, it's an incredible value. Ancient Peaks has its origins in an ambitious vineyard development by the Robert Mondavi Winery in the mid-1990s. Many of its vines grow in deep beds of giant fossilized oysters. Today, the winery produces a bevy of keenly priced, high-quality wines that deserve to be better known. (WK)  (5/2018)
