Herdade De Sao Miguel Escolha Dos Enologos Red 750Ml

The 2019 Escolha dos Enologos (São Miguel) is a blend of 50% Alicante Bouschet, 30% Touriga Franca and 20% Touriga Nacional, aged for nine months in new French oak. It comes in at 14.5% alcohol. A bit sharp and unevolved on opening, this has fine purity of fruit also some tension and grip on the big finish. It is beautifully balanced, showing mid-palate finesse to go with the fine fruit. It does probably need a little time in the cellar, but it should be in good form by mid-summer. It won't take long. At that point, its fruit should ascend to its rightful place—in charge and not secondary to the structure. I let it sit for an hour in the glass and it became fruit-forward, delicious and exuberant. There were some hints of Beaujolais. It looks like a fine vintage for this brand. It is also a bargain. It does need to show at least some development over the next few years to justify my enthusiasm, but it is so delicious today that it is worth leaning up on it for the moment.
